New features provide automation of the transformation process, advanced image editing capabilities, and entirely new data formats for processing. The ability to convert not only individual photos but also entire sequences and even video files to metric format. New digital image processing tools for extracting important information from images. The ability to process surveillance camera footage that captured the course of an event into metric format. Additional material for analysis or to supplement modeling. Features that speed up the conversion process—the use of cyclic codes and AprilTag, algorithms for their automatic detection, and the use of measurements from the field (*.eSurv files) or from external data (*.txt or *.csv files). About the Program PHOTORECT is a program used to process individual photographs, image segments, and videos from monitoring or captured during the documentation of incident scenes (traffic, criminal, fire, etc.) into metric format. The resulting orthophotos or individual frames can be used to measure the position, orientation, and size of objects, to detail situational plans, and to prepare time-series analyses. PHOTOGRAMMETRY Digital photographs are one of the key elements of crime scene documentation. Together with video footage, they serve as an invaluable source for conducting various types of analyses and reconstructing the course of events. With PHOTORECT, you can also use this data to take measurements. To convert a “regular” digital photo or film frame into a metric format, you must follow these rules:
  • the surface being transformed must be a plane (e.g., a road, a building wall, or an interior space)
  • at least four non-collinear points must be visible on the plane, with their actual distances known (they are precisely measured or can be determined based on the standard dimensions of visible elements, such as horizontal lane markings, paving stone sizes, etc.).
PHOTORECT uses image correction via the projective transformation (2D) method, which enables the photogrammetric transformation of a plane depicted in perspective into its parallel projection. An image created in accordance with the above assumptions, after transformation, represents a cartometric projection. It can be used for:
  • preparing and supplementing site sketches
  • taking measurements
  • determining the exact shape, dimensions, and position of traces
  • analyzing the compatibility of damage
  • spatio-temporal analysis
Use PHOTORECT to obtain metric images containing:
  • any traces on the road or other terrain
  • bloodstain marks on the floor/wall
  • deformations located on the side of a vehicle
  • bullet marks on the wall of a room or building
  • trace evidence and more
IMAGE EDITING In your work, you encounter photo and video materials of varying quality. You may encounter various challenges, such as image geometry defects, inadequate resolution, or poorly framed shots. PHOTORECT solves these problems by providing the following tools:
  • Distortion Removal
An example of distortion is curved edges of horizontal road markings or building facades that bend inward or toward the edges of the image. A photo with visible distortions is unsuitable for measurement, so before converting the image to a metric format, use the intuitive tools to correct the distortions.
  • Cropping and Erasing
If the images to be analyzed contain excess or unwanted content, you can select the areas to be removed or retained, and use the “Crop” feature to resize the photo or “Erase” to remove unwanted content while preserving the original size.
  • Resizing
Adjust the image you’re working with to suit your needs using the resize feature. VIDEO Very often, video files that capture the course of an event or its consequences are used as evidence. Recordings may come from in-vehicle cameras or industrial cameras (street cameras and those mounted on buildings). PHOTORECT reads and processes such data into a metric format and allows it to be used for analyzing traffic accidents and preparing time-motion studies. Work with video files in PHOTORECT is performed on a specific representative frame. Using the program’s features, you can perform any operations on it—removing distortions, cropping, applying filters, and converting to metric format. Any changes you make to the selected frame can later be automatically applied to the remaining frames using the export option. You can save selected frames from the video as separate image files. Organize your data by assigning any name to a series of files using settings such as prefix, numbering, and suffix. Freely define file formats and settings according to the individual needs of a specific event. AUTOMATION We know how important time and accuracy are in your work, which is why PHOTORECT is equipped with a range of tools that allow you to automate the conversion process. This not only speeds up your work but also eliminates errors. The following features are available to you:
  • Printing photogrammetric markers
Photogrammetric markers are markers that can be placed around the area you want to transform before taking a photo. They facilitate measurements and define control points in the photos. You can freely configure your photogrammetric markers and adapt them to the conditions in which you most often work by selecting the type, size, or color.
  • Automatically detect markers in a photo
If a photo contains photogrammetric markers, such as AprilTag or Circle Codes, you can run an algorithm that automatically detects them. Eliminate the need for manual point entry, thereby minimizing potential errors.
  • Distance measurement based on *.eSurv, *.csv, or *.txt files
Traffic police departments typically use the eSURV system to take measurements as part of their work. Using such a file, you can automatically determine the distances between points marked in the photo. Simply upload the *.eSurv file into the program, and the measurements will be matched to the corresponding points based on their names. Don’t have access to an *.eSurv file? No problem—you can prepare files containing point coordinates in CYBID software and import them into PHOTORECT.
  • Automatic alignment of results to the project in CYBID programs
Every orthophoto created in PHOTORECT will retain its scale when imported into any CYBID program. In addition, if point coordinates were used for transformation, the orthophoto will be positioned in the correct location on the sketch after import. No further panning or rotation is needed. IMAGE FILTERS There’s no such thing as a perfect photo. Sometimes, to extract important information from a photo, you need to adjust the brightness or colors. When you need to hide confidential data, PHOTORECT comes to the rescue, so you no longer need additional photo editing programs. PHOTORECT users have access to filters such as:
  • Brightness and Contrast—correcting overexposed or underexposed photos
  • Levels—improving the tonal range and color balance of an image
  • Blur—to hide confidential data
  • Sharpness—highlighting important elements of the image
  • Hue, Saturation, Brightness—adjust these settings to fine-tune the hue for a specific color range in your photo
  • Color Balance – to emphasize or tone down selected hues in a photo
  • Negative – for working with images taken at night
EXPORT As part of your work, you may need to create different file types for sharing, working in other programs, or publishing in a review. PHOTORECT allows you to export your edited results as:
  • video
Configure the frame rate and size of the resulting video file. Set your own frame rate, select a codec, and choose a recording format.
  • Image sequence
Export individual frames from a video recording for detailed analysis of events.
  • Individual orthophotos
Save a metric image in the selected format. You can choose from: *.tga, *.targa, *. tif, *.tiff, *.png, *.jpg, *.jpeg, *.jpe, *.jfif, *.jp2, *.jxr, *.hdp, *.wdp, *.webp, *.bmp, *.dib. Configure the quality settings and file size according to your needs. All materials exported in PHOTORECT are compatible with other CYBID programs. Film materials can be used in V-SIM to synchronize with prepared simulations; orthophoto maps will be loaded into the project at actual scale, and individual frames will be useful as material for conducting velocity analysis.
